Memorializing the Titanic

Remembering the Titanic

When the Titanic sank on April 14, 1912, many postcard companies produced postcards to memorialize the tragic event. Some of these postcards were repurposed from postcards used to advertise the ship, while others were created specifically as memorial cards. These two types of postcards both memorialize the Titanic and those whose lives were lost as well as provide some insight into what Finnegan terms the reproduction of images: "...the ways that the arrangement of image, text, and caption work to create meaning in the contexts of particular rhetorical events" (204).
